The Order , formally known as the Bavarian Enlightenment Society , was a relatively brief society established in 1777 with Adam Weishaupt, a lecturer at the University of Bavaria . Initially , its purpose was to challenge the sway of the Church and dogma through the promotion of reason and self-d
